The CFDA Announces the Full List of Nominees for Its 2020 Fashion Awards

The 2020 CFDA Fashion Awards are moving ahead, but with a few changes. Earlier this year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that it had postponed the in-person ceremony (dubbed by industry insiders as “fashion prom”) as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The new date is September 14, when winners of the design categories will be announced on CFDA.com and the CFDA’s social media channels.
“In this time of unprecedented challenge and change for our industry, we feel very strongly that it is important to recognize the nominees representing the best of fashion creativity,” said Tom Ford, chairman of the CFDA, in a statement. “We look forward to returning to an in-person celebration honoring the American fashion industry in 2021.”
Indeed, the 2020 edition will strictly focus on awarding the top fashion creatives in American womenswear, menswear, accessories, and emerging talent, along with global design‚ which, this year, has been enlarged to encompass both womenswear and menswear. Past honoree categories, including the Founder’s Award, the Award for Positive Change, the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Fashion Icon Award (an accolade given to a buzzy celebrity with style chops) have been taken off the roster. And the pomp and pageantry normal to the ceremony—with musicians and Hollywood stars rubbing elbows with designers, brand reps, journalists, and stylists—has also been eschewed. Instead, the CFDA will divest all its efforts into promoting the future of fashion and helping labels hurting as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The quinceanera or 'quince', meaning 15th birthday celebration, is a rite of passage into womanhood throughout Latin America. Girls in Havana are embracing this moment in history to make their photoshoots -- normally a glamorous affair, complete with hair, makeup and custom gowns -- uniquely of the moment, while protecting themselves and others, says Sofia Valenzuela, who's turning 15. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SOFIA VALENZUELA, CELEBRATING HER QUINCEANERA, SAYING: "I designed my quince dress, and the mask was very important because it marked an important stage in my life, which was the pandemic - it lasted three months - so I had to design my face masks to fit with my outfit and for all the colors to work. Apart from combining the colors, it was also for safety." Cuba made face masks obligatory in public spaces early on in the outbreak and credits them with helping it contain the spread of the coronavirus on the island. Some Cuban seamstresses have had to innovate, with some fabric shops still closed, making it difficult to create the perfect matching face covering, like this checkered mask, matching a checkered skirt. For a more urban look, a black mask to pair with black pants. Photographer Manuel Padron, who has been shooting quinceaneras for more than 10 years, says the masks contribute to the look "as if it was part of the whole show." It is a fashion statement that I think will stay. They were looking for a way to combine the color of the clothes with their masks. These young women are excited and it catches your attention to see them with a mask in the photograph.
